During the founding years of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC), representatives from Indigenous communities across the country sought to create positive systemic change through the power of education. In the years that followed, tribal colleges developed effective and impactful higher education programs, each rooted in the unique cultures, values, and languages of the communities they served. As one of AIHEC’s founding institutions, Turtle Mountain College (TMC) played a pivotal role in establishing strong foundations for positive systemic change through exceptional educational programming.
Throughout its formative years, TMC stakeholders set their sights on the next crucial step toward academic excellence— the development and implementation of a four-year degree program. Following more than two decades of foundational work, as well as the construction of a state-of-the-art building heading into the new millennium, the TMC Teacher Education Program emerged as a cornerstone of the institution’s commitment to preparing highly qualified and effective educators. Grounded in cultural relevance and academic rigor, the program was designed to address the unique needs of Indigenous students and communities, fostering a new generation of teachers equipped with the knowledge, skills, and cultural awareness necessary to make a lasting impact in classrooms both locally and beyond.
Over the years, the program has proudly graduated 172 dedicated educators, many of whom have continued their academic journeys by obtaining advanced degrees, including master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees. These achievements underscore the program’s emphasis on lifelong learning and professional growth, ensuring that its alumni remain at the forefront of educational innovation and leadership.
The TMC Teacher Education Program boasts an impressive placement percentage, with many graduates quickly securing teaching positions and, as they continue their education, eventually filling specialized roles in counseling, special education, and administration. This success not only reflects the quality of the program but also its far-reaching influence on educational systems. TMC alumni are making significant contributions not only within local school systems but across schools, districts, and educational institutions nationwide, effecting change at multiple levels of the educational landscape.
Brooke Zupan (Chippewa), the current St. John School District #3 middle school principal, a 2012 graduate of the TMC Teacher Education Program, and Rolette County’s most recent teacher of the year, frequently professes the importance of the program within local area schools. Zupan applauds the efforts of the program, stating, “The quality of the local teacher education program is truly outstanding, and I witness the importance of having access to well-trained, highly qualified educators in such a rural area.” Zupan also expressed her appreciation for the cohort model utilized by the program. At present, St. John School District #3 employs 17 culturally responsive and compassionate educators who proudly represent the TMC Teacher Education Program.
Looking ahead, the TMC teacher education team is embracing the future of education and developing effective educational programming aimed at meeting the diverse needs of today’s students. The team is working diligently to roll out a fully online track in elementary education, further adding cause for celebration. The team envisions similar online offerings for the secondary education programs (math, science, and English) as well, in efforts to provide greater accessibility and flexibility for students across the nation. This initiative will enable aspiring educators from diverse geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds to participate in TMC’s exceptional programs, further amplifying the program’s impact on Indigenous education.
In addition to expanding its academic offerings, TMC is dedicated to deepening its ties with local area schools through innovative “grow-your-own” and continuing education opportunities. By forging stronger relationships with community schools, TMC aims to create seamless pathways for local talent to develop into exemplary educators, ensuring that the program not only contributes to the broader educational landscape but also directly supports and enriches the communities it serves.
The ongoing 25-year celebration will provide stakeholders with an opportunity to reflect on the program’s transformative impact over the years while honoring the alumni, faculty, and staff who have played important roles in its early and continued success. True to the cohort model utilized within the elementary education and secondary education programs, this milestone calls for an institution and community-wide celebration—a celebration of commitment, cultural resilience, and the forward-thinking spirit that continues to drive educational excellence at Turtle Mountain College.
