The Blackfeet Community College (BFCC) board of trustees approved the forgiveness of $1,167,108.90 in eligible student debt, made possible through the unrestricted gift received from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. The action provides meaningful financial relief to students while addressing a significant barrier to enrollment and continued educational progress.
By eliminating eligible outstanding student balances, BFCC is creating an opportunity for students who may have been prevented from registering or continuing their education because of past-due institutional balances to return to the classroom and pursue their academic and career goals.
“This action reflects our commitment to putting students first,” said BFCC President Brad Hall. “Tribal colleges rarely have unrestricted funding, so when we do, we seek opportunities to address the financial barriers that can stand between our students and their education. This is an investment in our students and in the future of our institution.”
The debt forgiveness initiative reflects BFCC’s responsible stewardship of unrestricted philanthropic support by reducing barriers to student reengagement while strengthening the college’s financial position and maintaining resources for continued operations and student services.
The timing of the decision is particularly significant as BFCC prepares for fall 2026 registration. Students who were previously unable to register because of financial holds or outstanding institutional balances are encouraged to contact the college to determine whether they are eligible for debt forgiveness and discuss their options for returning this fall.
“The board’s decision recognizes the realities our students and families are facing and demonstrates the college’s commitment to strengthening access, opportunity, and student success through key investments that also strengthen the college’s financial position,” BFCC president Brad Hall said.
