Navajo Tech Signs Nursing Program MOU with the University of New Mexico

The memorandum of understanding describes how a training program, leadership development, and knowledge exchange will be carried out in the upcoming years.

On July 9, 2025, a partnership meeting between the Navajo Technical University (NTU) Nursing Program and the University of New Mexico (UNM) College of Nursing was held at NTU’s student union building. Dr. Michelle Kahn John provided an overview of NTU’s program and introduced the nursing team working alongside UNM faculty. Discussions covered challenges, strengths, and goals with both institutions, including resource limitations and a curriculum overview.

The two institutions signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), defining the collaboration between NTU and UNM during a one-year performance period. Participants visited NTU’s nursing facilities, which highlighted new modular buildings and renovations that support nursing students. The facilities feature new classrooms and dedicated staff, faculty, and administrators. UNM will collaborate with the incoming faculty next semester.

“We have been collaborating with UNM on our registered nursing program. They have experienced faculty who will mentor us. This exchange is based on the Diné philosophy, and cross-cultural training is part of NTU’s mentorship. UNM staff and faculty can join Diné language classes to foster knowledge sharing,” stated Dr. John.

The MOU details shared knowledge, experience, skills, faculty and staff, curriculum resources, and technology between both universities. It describes how a comprehensive training program, leadership development, and knowledge exchange will be carried out in the upcoming years. Moreover, Dr. John aims to create a pathway from NTU’s associate’s degree program to UNM’s doctoral programs.
