KBOCC’s memorial hallway honors both past and present veterans.

Honoring past, present, and future veterans has always been a priority at Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College (KBOCC). The main entrance of KBOCC’s Wabanung campus is dedicated to Keweenaw Bay Indian Community’s (KBIC’s) ogitchidaa (warriors). The memorial includes an eagle staff and full-size flags that lead into the heart of the building, including the banners of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Prisoners of War, KBIC, and KBOCC. There are also portrait photographs of numerous KBIC members who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces. Among these images is an impressive mural that measures approximately 6×8 feet that was inspired by those who risked their lives in the service of their community and country.

KBIC veteran Joe Eckerberg came up with the idea of dedicating the student services hallway. In 2008, KBOCC president Debra Parrish collected photographs from community members for the exhibit. With Eckerberg’s guidance, the memorial was further brought to life with illustrations by Casey E. Maki, a KBIC member and KBOCC student. While the collection of images is far from complete, it is a beginning. Individuals are encouraged to submit pictures to the KBOCC library. The memorial is a living wall that will continually grow as the community nourishes it and submits more photographs and stories.
