The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) has received a grant of $140,196 from the USDA Rural Development Tribal College Grant Program. The funds will be used to purchase fitness equipment that will be used by the IAIA students, faculty, and staff in IAIA’s health and performing arts classes. The equipment will also be used by the student activity clubs, primarily in the soon-to-open fitness and performing arts building. The equipment includes gymnasium and weight training equipment such as treadmills, elliptical cross-trainers, stationary bicycles, and various weight-training equipment.

IAIA also received three other grants from the USDA Rural Development Tribal Colleges Program from 2014-2016, totaling $449,102. The funds were used for the construction of the fitness and performing arts building. The dedication ceremony for the building will be held on Monday, November 6, 2017, during the annual IAIA open house.

JoAnn Bishop, IAIA’s health and fitness director, says, “IAIA is grateful for this generous grant, providing state-of-the-art fitness equipment for our students. Healthy bodies are important for student success.”
