Educating the Mind and Spirit

Volume 8, No. 1 - Summer 1996

The American Indian College Fund has launched a new advertising campaign, “Educating the Mind and Spirit,” that focuses upon the dual worlds in which Native students live, balancing a modern, economic world with traditional tribal culture. Created pro bono by the Portland-based advertising agency Wieden & Kenney, the campaign includes both print and television ads. It was photographed in November 1995 on the Navajo Reservation.

The television ads feature Floyd Red Crow Westerman (Dakota) as narrator and ask viewers to call 1800 776-FUND. The print ads show tribal college students in turn-of-the-century, Edward Curtis-style photos and contrast that with their modern goals and achievements. Students featured in the ads include A.J. Bigby from Fort Belknap College, Natalie Demontiney from Stone Child College, Tonya Anderson and Sharon Martin from Crownpoint Institute of Technology, and Douglas Katenay from Southwest Indian Polytechnic Institute.
