TEACHING WITH STORIES. Julie Cajune says, "I believe in the power of stories and the value of teaching with stories."
(Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes) was featured in the November/December 2009 issue of Utne Reader as one of the “50 Visionaries Who are Changing Your World.” She has been working in education for 19 years. A former classroom teacher, she earned a Master’s Degree in Education and returned to the Flathead Reservation in Montana to work as a curriculum specialist for the tribes. Cajune has worked on culturally responsive educational materials for the National Science Foundation, NASA, and the Montana Historical Society. She recently completed a three-year project developing classroom materials for the Indian Education for All initiative. Salish Kootenai College then hired her to use all of the materials to develop a curriculum guide for K-12 teachers. That guide includes a 60-page historic narrative on all the Montana tribes, a timeline for each reservation, numerous primary source documents and model K-12 lessons. She now works at Nkwusm, the Salish Language Revitalization Institute, as the director of development and teacher supervisor. Read the Utne article.
