Bay Mills Community College (BMCC) is proud to celebrate President Duane A. Bedell’s recent academic achievement: earning his Doctor of Education (EdD) in educational leadership from the University of Michigan-Flint. On November 15, 2024, Dr. Bedell successfully defended his dissertation, which examines the impact of tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) on Native American students’ ability to succeed as transfer students at mainstream higher education institutions.
“This accomplishment is a testament to the support of my family, colleagues, and the community,” Dr. Bedell shared. “I am deeply committed to understanding and addressing barriers Native students face in higher education. TCUs foster cultural identity, belonging, and academic readiness, and I want to highlight their impact on student success.”
Dr. Bedell’s connection to BMCC runs deep. A member of the Bay Mills Indian Community, he began his educational journey at Haskell Indian Junior College before transferring to Bay Mills Community College where he earned an Associate of Applied Science in computer information systems in 1998. Balancing work and family, he continued his education, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in information technology and security from Baker College in 2013, a Master of Arts in educational technology from the University of Michigan-Flint in 2015, and an education specialist degree in 2018. His EdD represents the culmination of decades of commitment to education and professional growth.
Over the past 20 years, Dr. Bedell has served tribal communities in various capacities, including as information technology director for the Intertribal Council of Michigan, an adjunct and full-time faculty member at BMCC, and chair of the Computer Information Systems Department at BMCC. His leadership roles expanded when he became the tribal manager for the Bay Mills Indian Community in 2018 and then president of BMCC in 2020.
Earning his EdD enhances Dr. Bedell’s ability to advocate for and implement innovative programs at BMCC. “This degree equips me with the knowledge to advance initiatives emphasizing cultural education, student success, and partnerships with mainstream institutions,” he explained. Under his leadership, BMCC strives to become a national model for academic and cultural support for Native students.
Reflecting on the challenges and rewards of completing his dissertation, Dr. Bedell acknowledged the difficulty of synthesizing limited literature while identifying gaps in existing research. Yet, he found great fulfillment in contributing actionable recommendations to improve educational outcomes for Native students.
Dr. Bedell is eager to build on BMCC’s strong foundation by enhancing cultural programming, incorporating Anishinaabe language on campus, and expanding transfer opportunities for students through partnerships with universities. “We offer a sense of belonging while maintaining rigorous educational standards,” he said. “I hope to deepen our cultural integration while providing accessible and transformative educational opportunities.”
For Dr. Bedell, BMCC is more than an institution; it is a vital hub for cultural preservation, economic development, and empowerment. His vision for the future emphasizes listening to the needs of students, faculty, and the broader community, ensuring that BMCC’s programs and initiatives align with its mission and values.
Dr. Bedell draws inspiration from his family, students, and colleagues, who remind him daily of the importance of his work. He encourages others to pursue higher education by setting clear goals, seeking mentorship, and staying connected to their purpose. “Balancing work, education, and family life requires discipline and good time management, but it’s essential to stay connected to your ‘why,’” he reflected. For Dr. Bedell, that “why” is serving Indian Country and advancing Native education while prioritizing health and family.
BMCC congratulates Dr. Bedell on this significant milestone, which exemplifies the college’s commitment to fostering leadership rooted in cultural values and academic excellence. His EdD not only strengthens his ability to lead BMCC but also inspires students, faculty, and community members to pursue their aspirations.
As BMCC continues to grow under Dr. Bedell’s leadership, the college reaffirms its mission of providing affordable, high-quality, and culturally relevant education to tribal communities and beyond.
