POSITION TITLE:              Lakota Language Activities Instructor

LOCATION:                         Family Support Center

                                             Sitting Bull College

                                             Fort Yates, ND

SALARY:                              Administrative Level IV 

                                               ($39,800-$43,400) DOE

SUPERVISION:                   Wichakini Project Director

 

SUMMARY OF WORK:

Responsible for working with the other Lakota Language Instructor as well as the fluent speaker in providing instruction in Lakota/Dakota to the 2-5 year old children in the Wichakini Immersion School. Responsible for a small group of toddlers/preschoolers. Perform activities that ensure the health, safety and progress of each toddler/preschooler in the group.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:  

 

  1. Provide a warm, nurturing and respectful environment: physical needs, emotional needs (talk with, smile at), cognitive needs (reads to, play with).
  2. Develop Lakota/Dakota curriculum for 3-5 classroom. Work with Curriculum/Assessment Manager.
  3. Maintain a strict Lakota/Dakota immersion environment with zero English in the immersion classroom and minimal English in the common areas.
  4. Plan and implement special activities for toddlers/preschoolers including gross motor skills, language development skills: forming words, recognizing pictures, sounds and songs sensory skills: touching, hearing in Lakota/Dakota.
  5. Prepare the room for the arrival of the toddlers/preschoolers and greet each parent and toddler/preschooler in Lakota/Dakota daily.
  6. Assist with free play and outdoor play.
  7. Assist toddlers/preschoolers with meals and cleanup.
  8. Perform housekeeping duties as scheduled.
  9. Develop and adhere to a daily schedule.
  10. Share with parents, information on toddlers/preschoolers each day outlining toddlers/preschoolers care and needs.
  11. Report back to the supervisor any significant or unusual occurrences.
  12. Attend staff meetings.
  13. Maintain confidentiality about children, families and the center.
  14. Be able to perform all of the above duties without supervision.

 

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Be at least 18 years old.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood, Native American Studies, Linguistics, Eminent Scholar or Education preferred.
  3. Must have basic skills in oral and written Lakota/Dakota and have practical knowledge of the Lakota/Dakota language.
  4. Should have an intimate knowledge of the social, historical, and political life of Lakota/Dakota people.
  5. Must communicate effectively with others, orally and in writing.
  6. Be willing to attend child development classes/training (including WestEd, CDA or college).
  7. Have first aid certification and food handler’s certification within 3 months of hire.
  8. Submit a current physical exam including Mantoux (TB test).
  9. Have reliable transportation and be available for occasional evening hours.
  10. Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  11. Able to manage time and have organizational skills.
  12. Have patience and ability to remain calm.
  13. Have knowledge and experience working with toddlers/preschoolers.
  14. Be flexible with routines and to work with different age groups.
  15. Be able to lift, push, and/or carry 40 lbs.; sit for 30 minutes and stand for 30 minutes.
  16. Be able to use all fingers on both hands, have use of both legs and walk 500 feet.
  17. Have near and far vision and depth perception.
  18. Be able to hear all types of sounds.
  19. Be perceptive and aware of all infants in the room.
  20. Be able to work in different environments: inside/outside, noisy/quiet,
