Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Residence Education and Housing Services, the Associate Director of Residence Education provides leadership and strategic vision to, and is responsible for, developing strategic residence education plans to engage in the Liberal Learning goals and professional development plans for staff in MSU’s residential Neighborhoods. The Associate Director manages the daily operations of residence halls and apartments to create, deliver, and assess residence education staff training and ongoing development sessions. Further, the Associate Director acts as the secondary hearing officer for appeals for contract terminations. MSU Residence Education is a comprehensive housing operation with over 15,000 residents, more than 350 resident assistants, more than 35 full time staff, and annual revenues in excess of $70 million. The new Associate Director must be committed to the following principles: student learning, engagement, and development through the neighborhood model; intercultural learning and inclusion; restorative justice principles and sustainable practices. The Associate Director must understand and appreciate that they are the primary custodians of the Residence Education and Housing Services brand and work in a culture of accountability to ensure that the brand is strengthened through daily actions. While supervising five Assistant Directors for residence education, the Associate Director will manage high level student issues, partner with families, promote outcomes assessment and evaluation, assess staffing needs, and assist the Senior Associate Director in the overall leadership of the organization, promoting quality services for all areas of the community. Finally, the new Associate Director will help lead the strategic planning efforts, including annual goals, objectives, and professional development plans which maximize partnerships, resources, and synergistic relationship throughout the department.
The position requires a master’s degree higher education administration or a related field and five to eight years of progressively more responsible and expansive work experience in residence life and housing. The successful candidate will have experience in program development, administration and assessment, management and/or supervision. Among a broad array of desired qualities, the successful candidate will be a visionary and collaborative leader with the ability to strategically manage and facilitate organizational change; demonstrate exceptional business, fiscal planning, and budget management skills; and have an understanding of living-learning communities and how to shape environments that support comprehensive educational and developmental programs.
